The Balinese year (wuku) is 210 days and every one of the thousands of temples (pura) in Bali and smaller community temples and shrines (sangga) holds an annual ceremony ( “Odalan”) once every year per the Bali calendar. These events take place on the anniversary of the dedication of each temple/shrine. Celebrations last at least one full day and those at the Mother Temple Besakih always last at least 7 days.
So every day somewhere in Bali there are many ceremonies and festivals taking place. A calendar of forthcoming ceremonies is published in the English daily Bali Post.
There are also times when the entire island of Bali hold celebrations:
Celebrations are always colourful with red, white or black umbrellas used in front of the shrine depending on which Gods are worshipped at a particular shrine. Besides umbrellas in front of shrines are long flags (umbul-umbul), all are attributes of holiness. In front of the temple entrance are long bamboo poles (penjor) decorated with coconut leaves. Balinese women and girls in traditional Balinese attire ( sarung kebaya) gracefully carry offerings on their heads of fruits and food items to the temple during these celebrations.
Such ceremonies always excite the interest and admiration of visitors to Bali. BaiI Hinduism is quite unique and distinct from other belief systems with just two and a half million devotees. Nevertheless Bali Hindus are totally committed to the continuity and development of their religion which permeates all parts of daily life in Bali.
